4 Ecommerce Google Ads Levers That Move ROAS

Feed Quality is Everything

Google Shopping ROAS is almost entirely determined by product feed quality. Titles should follow: Brand + Product Type + Key Attributes (size, color, material). Poor titles lower impression share 40–60% and increase CPC by 25–35%.

Segment by Margin, Not Revenue

Separate high-margin from low-margin products into different campaigns with different ROAS targets. Chasing ROAS on $8 profit items at the same rate as $80 profit items destroys unit economics.

Cart Abandoners: Your Best RLSA Segment

RLSA bid modifiers of +100–+200% for cart abandoners routinely produce 7–10x ROAS. This single audience segment often accounts for 30–40% of Google Ads revenue for mid-size ecommerce brands.

Performance Max: Signals Over Budget

PMax with customer list signals (past purchasers, email subscribers) outperforms PMax without signals by average 1.8x ROAS. Don't launch PMax without at minimum 1,000 matched customers in your seed list.

These benchmarks are drawn from a multi-source benchmark cohort aggregated across industries and regions, covering the period Q1 2023 – Q4 2024. Figures on this page come from the Benchmarketing benchmark dataset: thousands of curated benchmark observations spanning channels, industries, and US metro areas, refreshed on a published schedule. Every statistic traces to a named source — no anonymous “studies show.” Data is sourced from:

The Benchmarketing 4-Band Method reads every marketing metric against four percentile bands — P25 (bottom quartile), median, P75 (top quartile), and elite (top ~10%) — for a specific industry and channel, instead of a single cross-industry average. Averages blend brand and non-brand campaigns, $500/month and $500,000/month accounts, and unrelated industries into a number almost nobody actually has.

Benchmarks reflect median values across large sample sets. Your industry, business model, and account maturity will cause variation. Use P25/P75 ranges to understand realistic distribution.

Frequently Asked Questions

The industry average is 4.8x, but the right target depends on your margins. Formula: Minimum ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin %. At 25% margins, you need at least 4x ROAS to break even on ad spend. Target 5–7x ROAS for healthy profitability at typical ecommerce margins of 30–40%.
