What Is Average Order Value (AOV)?

Average Order Value (AOV) is the mean revenue generated per completed transaction. It is one of three fundamental levers of ecommerce revenue growth — alongside conversion rate and traffic volume. AOV directly determines your maximum viable CPA: if your AOV is $100 and gross margin is 50%, your maximum CPA is $50 to break even.

Formula

AOV = Total Revenue ÷ Number of Orders

AOV varies significantly by acquisition channel: organic and email channels typically show higher AOV because they reach customers with established purchase intent or existing brand relationships. Paid social (especially TikTok and impulse-format ads) trends lower because ads interrupt browsing, leading to smaller, more impulsive purchases.

How to Increase Average Order Value

AOV optimization is one of the highest-ROI levers available — it grows revenue without increasing ad spend or traffic.

1

Add a free shipping threshold above your current AOV

The single most effective AOV lever in ecommerce. Set a free shipping threshold 20–30% above your current AOV median. If your AOV is $80, set free shipping at $99–105. Most customers will add items to their cart to qualify rather than pay shipping fees. This mechanism reliably increases AOV by 15–30% for mid-priced consumer products. Show progress clearly in the cart: "You're $14 away from free shipping."

2

Implement post-add-to-cart upsell with a complementary product

Immediately after a customer adds an item to their cart, show a product recommendation ('Customers also bought...' or 'Complete your look with...'). Cart-stage upsells convert at 12–24% depending on relevance, adding directly to AOV with no additional acquisition cost. The upsell must be genuinely complementary — cross-sells that feel forced have higher decline rates and can hurt cart completion.

3

Create product bundles that provide better value than individual items

Bundles consistently increase AOV while improving perceived value. A skincare brand bundling cleanser + serum + moisturizer at 15% discount achieves 2.4x the AOV of a single product purchase. Test bundles at: 10–20% discount (significant enough to motivate, not so deep it destroys margin), featuring 3–4 complementary products, with a named 'story' (the Morning Routine Bundle, the Starter Kit).

4

Launch a loyalty/subscription program with order-size incentives

Subscription programs (subscribe & save) consistently increase AOV by encouraging larger monthly commitments. Subscription customers also have higher LTV, lower churn, and higher AOV than one-time buyers. Loyalty programs with tier-based rewards ('Spend $200 this month to unlock Silver status') encourage single-order increases to hit tier thresholds — a common trigger for above-average order sizes.

5

Improve your product recommendation engine

AI-powered product recommendation engines (Shopify's native recommendations, Klaviyo product blocks, or dedicated tools like LimeSpot, Rebuy) generate 10–30% of revenue for stores that implement them well. The key is recommendation relevance — 'Recently viewed' and 'Frequently bought together' outperform generic 'You may also like' by 40–60% on click-through and AOV lift.

Average Order Value Benchmark FAQ

The overall ecommerce median AOV is $128, but this number is nearly meaningless without industry context. Electronics median is $271; books are $38. Compare your AOV against your specific category benchmarks above, not a cross-industry average. "Good" AOV is also relative to your gross margin and CPA target — an $80 AOV with 70% margin is more profitable than a $140 AOV with 20% margin.
