Emergency services (plumbing, HVAC repair) see the highest CTR and CVR due to immediate need. Roofing has higher CPA due to longer consideration and storm-event seasonality. LSA availability varies by trade — check the LSA column for your category.

Hyperlocal targeting is the primary efficiency lever
Home services are the most geographically constrained Google Ads vertical — you cannot serve customers outside your service area. Every impression outside your radius is wasted. Use Google Ads location targeting set to 'People in or regularly in [location]' (not 'People interested in'), set service-area radius tightly (10–25 miles for most metro markets), and use location bid adjustments (+20–40% for your core service zip codes). Hyperlocal campaigns see 30–50% lower CPA than metro-wide targeting.
Emergency keywords have the highest CVR and deserve premium bids
'Emergency plumber,' 'AC repair now,' 'same day electrician' — these urgency keywords have CVR 2–3x higher than planned-service keywords ('HVAC installation quote,' 'landscaping estimate'). Emergency queries come from users who must hire someone immediately, regardless of cost. Segment emergency keywords into separate ad groups or campaigns with 30–50% higher bids, emergency-specific ad copy ('Available 24/7 — Call Now'), and a call extension as the primary CTA.
LSA (Local Service Ads) is the highest-ROI channel for qualified trades
For trades that qualify for LSA (HVAC, plumbing, electrical, pest control, house cleaning), LSA delivers average CPA of $25–45 per verified lead — significantly lower than standard search ($40–100). LSA appears above all standard ads and pays per-lead, not per-click. The 'Google Guaranteed' badge converts at 18%+ because users see it as a trust signal and liability guarantee. Apply for LSA, complete the background check and license verification, and treat it as your primary paid channel.
Seasonality swings of 50–80% require proactive bid management
Home services is one of the most seasonal Google Ads verticals. HVAC searches spike 200%+ in temperature extremes. Roofing doubles post-storm events. Landscaping peaks April–June. Failing to adjust bids for seasonality wastes budget in slow periods and loses impression share in peak periods. Set up seasonal bid adjustments (scripts or Smart Bidding with seasonality adjustment signals), and review budget allocation monthly as the season progresses.
LSA first. Local targeting second. Emergency keywords third. Everything else optimizes from that foundation.
Launch LSA before standard search if your trade qualifies
Google Local Service Ads (Google Guaranteed) delivers verified job leads at $25–60 each for qualifying home service trades. It shows above all standard ads, pays per-lead not per-click, and the 'Google Guaranteed' badge drives 18%+ conversion rates. Complete the application: background check for owners and techs, license upload, insurance verification. Most companies are live within 2–3 weeks. LSA should be activated before scaling any standard search campaign.
Create separate campaigns for emergency vs. planned services
Emergency keywords ('emergency AC repair,' 'pipe burst,' '24 hour plumber') have fundamentally different intent — users need service in the next 1–4 hours. Planned keywords ('HVAC tune-up,' 'landscaping estimate,' 'roof inspection') have 1–4 week decision timelines. Mix these together and your optimization suffers. Create separate campaigns: Emergency (24/7 scheduling, call-only ads, higher bids), Planned (business hours, form + call, standard bids). The split enables dramatically different ad copy and landing page strategies.
Use call-only ads during peak hours for emergency services
For emergency home service queries, the user wants to call — not visit a website and fill out a form. Call-only ads (mobile-only format that dials directly when tapped) eliminate the form-fill step for emergency traffic. For plumbing, HVAC, and electrical, run call-only ads during business hours alongside standard ads. Call-only ads typically achieve 40–60% lower cost-per-call than standard ads with call extensions for high-urgency trades.
Tighten location radius to your actual service territory
The most common waste in home services Google Ads is clicks from outside your service area. If you service a 20-mile radius around your shop, every click from outside that radius is pure waste. In Google Ads campaign settings, set target locations to your specific city, zip codes, or radius around your address. Use the location performance report monthly to identify and exclude areas with high click volume but zero conversions — there are always a few.
Ask for Google reviews immediately after every completed job
Google reviews directly impact your ad performance in two ways: (1) LSA ranking — Google Guaranteed ads rank partly by review quantity and rating. (2) Organic visibility alongside your ads. Automate review requests: send an SMS 2–4 hours after job completion with a direct link to your Google Business Profile review page. Aim for 50+ reviews at 4.7+ stars within 12 months. Companies that reach this threshold see 20–35% higher conversion rates from their Google listings and LSA placements.
Varies by trade and job value. Pest control ($29.50 avg CPA) and house cleaning ($30 avg CPA) have low CPA because the service is recurring and accessible. Roofing ($100.80 avg CPA) and HVAC installation ($73.60) have higher CPA but are justified by $3,000–15,000+ job values. Target CPA at 2–5% of average job revenue: a plumber with a $400 avg job should target $8–20 CPA. Use LSA where available to reduce CPA by 30–50% vs. standard search.

The Benchmarketing 4-Band Method reads every marketing metric against four percentile bands — P25 (bottom quartile), median, P75 (top quartile), and elite (top ~10%) — for a specific industry and channel, instead of a single cross-industry average. Averages blend brand and non-brand campaigns, $500/month and $500,000/month accounts, and unrelated industries into a number almost nobody actually has.
Benchmarks reflect median values across large sample sets. Your industry, business model, and account maturity will cause variation. Use P25/P75 ranges to understand realistic distribution.
