Avg Open Rate, all industries
Open rate varies by 8+ percentage points across industries. Nonprofit and Education lead because subscribers have strong mission alignment or enrollment intent. Compare to your industry peer group, not the overall average.

Higher open rate is better. P25 = accounts in lower quartile. P75 = top quartile performers. Use your industry median as baseline; target P75 as your optimization goal.
Four key metrics tell the complete story of email performance. Use them together - not in isolation.

P25: 0.05% P75: 0.20% Elite: <0.05%Since September 2021, Apple Mail Privacy Protection (MPP) pre-fetches email images - including tracking pixels - even if the user never opens the email. This has inflated reported open rates by 8 - 15 percentage points for lists with significant Apple Mail users (typically 40 - 60% of B2C lists).
How to adjust: Compare click-to-open rate (CTOR) trends rather than raw open rate. CTOR is not affected by MPP. If your CTOR is declining while open rates rise, MPP inflation is masking a real engagement decline.
Subject line is the #1 lever
Open rate is almost entirely a function of subject line + preview text + sender name. Personalization (first name), urgency, curiosity gaps, and numbers in subject lines consistently outperform generic statements.
Sender reputation and domain health
Email deliverability directly affects open rate. Low sender reputation = spam folder = zero opens. Maintain list hygiene (remove 6-month non-openers), set up SPF/DKIM/DMARC, and avoid spam trigger words.
Send time optimization
For B2C: Tuesday - Thursday, 8 - 10am or 5 - 7pm local time tends to outperform. For B2B: Tuesday and Thursday mornings. A/B test send times across your list - industry data is a starting point, your audience may differ.
List segmentation and relevance
Segmented campaigns achieve 14% higher open rates than non-segmented (Mailchimp). Sending the right content to a relevant sub-segment always outperforms batch-and-blast to the full list.
In priority order - start at the top before moving down.
1Clean your list before anything else
Remove subscribers who have not opened in 6+ months. Send a re-engagement campaign first ("Do you still want to hear from us?"). Removing inactive subscribers improves deliverability and open rates for your active list - this is not optional.
2A/B test subject lines systematically
Test one variable at a time: length (<50 chars vs. 50+ chars), personalization (with/without first name), question vs. statement, emoji vs. no emoji. Run tests on 20% of your list, send the winner to the remaining 80%. Iterate weekly.
3Optimize preview text (not just subject line)
Preview text is the second line subscribers see in inbox. Most marketers ignore it - leaving the default "View in browser" or the email's first sentence. Write preview text that complements (not repeats) the subject line with additional curiosity or specificity.
4Segment by engagement recency for separate strategies
Highly engaged subscribers (opened last 30 days) get your main campaign send. Warm subscribers (opened 31 - 90 days) get a re-engagement offer. Cold subscribers (90+ days, no open) get a final "we're cleaning our list" win-back. Different strategies, different content.
5Monitor CTOR as your real engagement signal
With Apple MPP inflating open rates, Click-to-Open Rate (CTR - Open Rate) is now the most reliable engagement indicator. A declining CTOR while open rates rise is a red flag. A rising CTOR even with stable open rates means your content resonates.

The Benchmarketing 4-Band Method reads every marketing metric against four percentile bands — P25 (bottom quartile), median, P75 (top quartile), and elite (top ~10%) — for a specific industry and channel, instead of a single cross-industry average. Averages blend brand and non-brand campaigns, $500/month and $500,000/month accounts, and unrelated industries into a number almost nobody actually has.
Benchmarks reflect median values across large sample sets. Your industry, business model, and account maturity will cause variation. Use P25/P75 ranges to understand realistic distribution.
