Slow pages lose visitors before they see anything, and Google uses page experience as one of many signals in search. Core Web Vitals give you three measurable targets.

The three Core Web Vitals

MetricWhat it measuresGood
Largest Contentful Paint (LCP)How long the main content takes to appear2.5 seconds or less
Interaction to Next Paint (INP)How quickly the page responds to taps and clicks200 milliseconds or less
Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS)How much the page jumps around as it loads0.1 or less

Google assesses these at the 75th percentile of real visits, so most visitors, not just the fastest, need a good experience. INP replaced First Input Delay as a Core Web Vital in 2024.

Where to find your numbers

  • Search Console's Core Web Vitals report shows real-user data for your pages, grouped by issue.
  • PageSpeed Insights shows real-user data where available, plus a lab test with specific suggestions.

Real-user data matters more than lab scores. A page can score well in a lab test and still be slow for people on mid-range phones.

Fixes that usually matter most

For LCP: - Compress and correctly size images; serve modern formats such as WebP or AVIF. - Do not lazy-load the main image at the top of the page; preload it instead. - Reduce server response time with caching and a CDN.

For INP: - Ship less JavaScript, and split it so each page loads only what it needs. - Break up long tasks so the browser can respond between them. - Audit third-party scripts: chat widgets, tag managers and trackers are frequent causes.

For CLS: - Set width and height on images and video. - Reserve space for ads, embeds and banners before they load. - Avoid inserting content above what the visitor is reading.

Why it matters for paid traffic too

Every paid click that bounces from a slow page is wasted spend. Landing page experience is also one of the components of Google Ads Quality Score. Speed improvements raise conversion rate on every channel at once.
