Avg CTR, reels placement
Consumer lifestyle verticals (fashion, beauty, food) show the strongest VCR and CTR on Reels. B2B and financial verticals see lower video completion, reflecting audience affinity mismatch — but CPM efficiency still makes Reels valuable for awareness even in these verticals.

Reels offers the cheapest impressions of all primary Meta placements — 45% lower CPM than Facebook Feed. Higher CPM placements like Facebook Feed typically deliver stronger direct-response performance but at a higher cost.
| Format | CTR | CPM | VCR | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reels (9:16 full screen) | 0.74% | $7.40 | 38% | Highest reach efficiency |
| Stories (9:16 full screen) | 0.59% | $8.60 | 31% | Best for retargeting |
| Instagram Feed (4:5) | 0.88% | $11.20 | N/A | Highest direct-response CTR |
| Facebook Feed (1:1) | 1.51% | $13.60 | N/A | Highest overall CTR |
| Audience Network | 0.28% | $6.10 | 18% | Lowest CPM, lowest quality |
Hook within the first 2 seconds is non-negotiable
Reels users are in an algorithmic content stream. They have trained thumbs and will skip any ad that does not immediately grab attention. Your first 2 seconds must contain a pattern interrupt: unexpected motion, a bold statement, a question, or a relatable scenario. The creative that succeeds in Reels is indistinguishable from organic Reels content in style.
CPM efficiency makes Reels ideal for top-of-funnel
At $7.40 median CPM, Reels delivers roughly 45% cheaper impressions than Facebook Feed ($13.60 CPM). For brand awareness, reach, and top-of-funnel video view campaigns, Reels is the most cost-efficient Meta placement. Use it to build audience pools for later retargeting — video viewers (25%, 50%, 75%, 95%) are valuable custom audiences for feed retargeting campaigns.
Audio-on creative is essential for Reels
Unlike Feed ads (often viewed with sound off), Reels users typically have audio on by default. Ads shot with natural sound, trending audio, or purpose-built voiceover significantly outperform text-only or silent-creative versions in Reels. Synchronizing on-screen text with spoken audio also improves accessibility and retention for sound-off viewing. Always design for both states.
Vertical video completion drives algorithm amplification
Meta rewards content that gets watched. The higher your organic Reels video completion rate, the lower your CPM on Reels ads. Ads with 50%+ completion rates often see CPMs 20–30% lower than ads that lose viewers early. Optimize for completion, not just clicks: tighter pacing, strong mid-hook at the 3–5 second mark, and a payoff reveal near the end all improve completion.
Reels rewards native-format content. Optimize for completion before clicks.
Shoot vertical 9:16 native to the format
Reels is a full-screen vertical experience. Never run horizontal or square content in Reels — it signals "ad" to the user and dramatically reduces completion rates. Shot composition should account for the UI overlay at top and bottom of screen; place your key visual and text in the middle 70% of the frame.
Create a hook in the first 2 seconds
Reels has the highest skip rate of any Meta placement. The first 2 seconds are everything. Open with motion, a surprising statement, a question, or a before/after reveal. "Wait until you see this," "POV: you just found out..." and similar pattern interrupts consistently outperform product-first openers. Never open with a logo or brand name intro.
Use trending audio or original sound design
Audio is on by default in Reels. Content with trending audio (licensed or original) gets higher organic distribution, which can amplify your paid reach. If you cannot use trending audio, invest in purpose-built sound design — a crisp voiceover with subtle music bed performs better than silence. Add captions for sound-off accessibility.
Build retargeting audiences from video completion events
Video view custom audiences (people who watched 25%, 50%, 75%, 95% of your Reels ad) are among the highest-intent segments you can build on Meta. Use Reels for low-CPM awareness, then retarget engaged video viewers with Feed ads featuring a direct offer. This TOFU → BOFU sequence often delivers 30–40% lower blended CPA than pure Feed-only campaigns.
Test Advantage+ placements to let Meta optimize
Manually restricting campaigns to Reels-only limits Meta's ability to find efficiency. Use Advantage+ placements and set your campaign objective (sales, leads) — Meta will dynamically shift budget between Reels, Feed, Stories, and Audience Network based on real-time conversion signals. Monitor placement breakdown reports weekly to understand where conversions are actually coming from.
Reels typically has a lower direct-response CTR (0.74%) compared to Facebook Feed (1.51%), but its significantly lower CPM ($7.40 vs. $13.60) means your cost-per-click can be competitive. For awareness and retargeting pool building, Reels is excellent. For pure bottom-funnel DR, Feed usually outperforms. The ideal approach is Advantage+ placements so Meta allocates between the two based on real-time performance.

The Benchmarketing 4-Band Method reads every marketing metric against four percentile bands — P25 (bottom quartile), median, P75 (top quartile), and elite (top ~10%) — for a specific industry and channel, instead of a single cross-industry average. Averages blend brand and non-brand campaigns, $500/month and $500,000/month accounts, and unrelated industries into a number almost nobody actually has.
Benchmarks reflect median values across large sample sets. Your industry, business model, and account maturity will cause variation. Use P25/P75 ranges to understand realistic distribution.
