TikTok In-Feed, cross-industry median
Video Completion Rate (VCR) is the percentage of ad impressions where the viewer watches the video to completion (or to the defined threshold — usually 100%, 75%, or 30 seconds for longer formats). It is the primary signal of creative engagement quality for video advertising.
Formula
VCR = (Complete Views ÷ Total Impressions) × 100
VCR is calculated differently across platforms. YouTube TrueView counts a "view" at 30 seconds or completion (whichever comes first). TikTok tracks VCR at 100% completion. Meta reports video plays at 25%, 50%, 75%, 95%, and 100% thresholds. Always confirm the definition when comparing across platforms.
Important: Non-skippable formats (YouTube 15s, bumpers) report 100% VCR by definition — users cannot skip. Exclude these when benchmarking creative engagement. Only compare skippable formats to skippable benchmarks.

VCR is a direct signal of creative quality. These levers apply across all video platforms.
1Open with a pattern interrupt in the first 2 seconds
VCR is determined in the first 2 seconds of a video ad. Viewers who are not engaged within that window skip immediately. Pattern interrupts that stop the scroll: unexpected motion, a bold statement with curiosity gap, direct eye contact, a surprising visual contrast, or starting mid-action. Never open with a logo, brand name, or slow fade-in — these signal 'advertisement' and trigger the skip response.
2Match video length to platform expectations
VCR is inversely correlated with video length for most platforms. Optimal lengths: TikTok (7–15s for 70%+ VCR; 15–30s for standard), YouTube Shorts (15–30s), Meta Reels (7–15s), YouTube TrueView (15–30s for best VCR; 60s+ for educational content that earns attention). Every additional 5 seconds reduces expected completion by 3–5 percentage points on skippable platforms.
3Add a mid-hook at the 5–7 second mark
The skip button appearing at 5 seconds is a second decision point for viewers. Add a secondary 'stay hook' around 5–7 seconds: a preview of what's coming, a surprising reveal, or a continuation of a story thread started in the first 3 seconds. Videos with strong mid-hooks see 15–25% higher VCR than those with flat middle sections.
4Design for sound-off — use captions and text overlays
60–80% of video ads on Meta and TikTok are watched with sound off. Videos that rely on narration without visual text overlays lose a majority of their potential audience. Add captions for all spoken content. Sound-off optimized videos consistently achieve 20–35% higher VCR than audio-dependent creative.
5A/B test first-frame creative relentlessly
The single highest-impact variable for VCR is the first frame. Run systematic A/B tests varying: person-facing-camera vs. product shot vs. text-on-background, indoor vs. outdoor, with vs. without on-screen text. Most accounts find a clear winner within 2–3 tests that delivers 20–40% higher VCR. Never run a single creative variant without a challenger.
It depends entirely on the platform and format. A good VCR on TikTok is 50%+ (median 54%). On YouTube TrueView (skippable), 30%+ is good (median 31%). On Meta Reels, 35%+ is strong (median 38%). For non-skippable formats, 100% VCR is expected by definition. Always benchmark VCR against the same platform and format type — a 30% VCR is below average on TikTok but above average on YouTube TrueView.
