0.35%
Avg CTR, google Display Network
Display's core advantage is the lowest CPM of any digital ad format. The trade-off: much lower CTR and CVR compared to intent-based channels. Use display for reach and retargeting, not primary conversion.
| Segment | Median CPM | Low range | High range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Ads (Search) | $38.40 | $22 | $58 |
| Google Ads (Display) | $3.12 | $1.50 | $5.80 |
| Meta Ads | $14.40 | $8.50 | $24.80 |
| LinkedIn Ads | $33.80 | $19 | $58 |
| Display / Programmatic | $2.80 | $1.20 | $5.40 |
Lower CPM is better for display. Display / Programmatic at $2.80 CPM is the most cost-efficient impression channel. Compare carefully - high CPM channels (Google Search) convert at far higher rates.

CTR: 0.35% CPM: $3.12 CPC: $0.63Best for retargeting and brand awareness at scale. 90%+ internet reach. Use for remarketing lists (website visitors, YouTube viewers) rather than cold prospecting.
Programmatic Display
CTR: 0.30% CPM: $2.80 CPC: $0.55Automated buying across multiple ad exchanges. Lowest CPM channel. Best for large-scale brand campaigns and cross-site retargeting with DMP-based audience segments.
Responsive Display Ads (RDA)
CTR: 0.45% CPM: $3.50 CPC: $0.71Google's auto-optimizing format. Provides assets (images, headlines) and Google assembles combinations. Typically outperforms standard image ads by 10 - 20% on CTR.
Native Display Ads
CTR: 0.80% CPM: $4.20 CPC: $0.52Ads that match the look and feel of surrounding content. Higher CTR than standard display. Used on news sites and content networks. Less banner blindness than standard formats.
Audience quality over reach
Display retargeting (website visitors, email lists, YouTube viewers) typically achieves 3 - 5x higher CVR than prospecting. Never run cold display traffic to a generic homepage - always use audience-specific landing pages.
Banner blindness is real
Standard 728 - 90 leaderboard and 300 - 250 rectangle banner ads have declining CTR year over year. Native, responsive, and video display formats consistently outperform static banners by 2 - 3x on attention and CTR.
Frequency caps prevent waste
Without frequency caps, display campaigns show the same ad 15 - 30+ times to the same user - wasting budget and damaging brand perception. Set frequency caps of 5 - 7 impressions per user per week for prospecting campaigns.
Brand safety placement exclusions
Display can place ads on low-quality or inappropriate content without proper exclusions. Always apply placement exclusions (news, gaming, parked domains) and review placement reports weekly for the first 60 days.
Display works when used correctly - primarily for retargeting and brand reinforcement, not primary conversion.
Use RLSA and remarketing lists as your primary strategy
Your highest-ROI display spend targets people who already know you: website visitors (segmented by page visited), email list uploads, and YouTube viewers. These audiences convert at 3 - 8x the rate of cold display audiences.
Run sequential creative for retargeting
Show different ads based on where the user is in the funnel. Day 1 - 3 after visit: product/service reminder. Day 4 - 7: social proof/testimonial. Day 8 - 14: offer or urgency. Sequential messaging increases CVR by 40 - 60% vs. showing the same ad repeatedly.
Apply topic and placement exclusions immediately
Exclude gaming, mobile apps, parked domains, and below-the-fold placements from day one. These placements have high click fraud rates and low intent. Check Placements report weekly for the first month.
Use responsive display ads, not static image ads
Responsive Display Ads (upload 5+ images, 5 headlines, 5 descriptions) allow Google to test combinations and auto-optimize toward conversions. They outperform static ads by 10 - 20% on CTR and 15 - 25% on conversion rate.
Set a CPM bid cap for prospecting campaigns
Target CPM bidding with a bid cap prevents Display from overpaying for low-quality placements. Combined with target CPA bidding for retargeting, you get efficiency on both prospecting (awareness at low CPM) and conversion (ROI-focused retargeting).
The Google Display Network median CTR is 0.35%. A good display CTR is anything above 0.50% - that puts you in the top quartile. Display CTR is inherently lower than Search because users are not actively looking for your product. Do not benchmark display CTR against Google Search CTR (4 - 6%) - they are fundamentally different intent environments.

The Benchmarketing 4-Band Method reads every marketing metric against four percentile bands — P25 (bottom quartile), median, P75 (top quartile), and elite (top ~10%) — for a specific industry and channel, instead of a single cross-industry average. Averages blend brand and non-brand campaigns, $500/month and $500,000/month accounts, and unrelated industries into a number almost nobody actually has.
Benchmarks reflect median values across large sample sets. Your industry, business model, and account maturity will cause variation. Use P25/P75 ranges to understand realistic distribution.
